Install a section of spa flex or vinyl tubing after the return pump before attaching to the PVC.

what causes the humming noise ? the return pump or the PVC pipe ? why a flexible tube between the return pump and PVC pipe will stop it ? thanks

Vibration from the pump impellor is being transmitted to the rigid PVC pipe. A less rigid material will cut down on the transmission. Even a 6 inch section of Spa Flex or vinyl tubing should reduce/eliminate the humming you are getting today.

I agree with EverettReef - the vibration's coming from your pump, which probably means your impeller needs to be replaced. How old is the pump/impeller?

Just to clarify - I agree with everettreef that the vibration is being transmitted from the pump. A possible source for the vibration may be an aging impeller. |

Check your pump mounting as well. It may help to add some sort of rubber pad to your pump mounts.

So just attach a 6" flex tube using aquarium acrylic and clamps to the pump , and acrylic to the pvc?

Thanks, I think i'm going to have to do that this weekend. I too am getting much vibration from my external pump; i can even feel it in the sump and am a little worried about long term usage. I will add 6" to 12" on the intake and return side of the pump and then place a bigger piece of rubber under the pump and see how it handles then.
Thanks. |
