aiptasia identification. pic
I found this guy underneath a new sps frag I just received. I though I saw him on the frag before I put it in the tank so I tried to scrape around the hole it was in underneath the encrusted plug, and then filled the hole with epoxy since the bottom was going to be mounted anyways.
well today I see this little head come out from underneath the epoxy! This look like aiptasia, just want to confirm. I think im going to go get a syringe and use some lemon juice. Last edited by sebrofjr; 08/14/2009 at 12:31 PM. |

I wanted to make sure as well as , I heard of people trying to remove them, then having them spread all over the tank. If I leave it alone until I get the proper removal equipment, will it only spread like normal anemones, by splitting?

I just put in (2) peppermint shrimp last night. I will be happy to see positive results. So far I cannot even find the shrimp and the aiptasia are still there. They better get to work.

Peppermint shrimp can be hit or miss. I wouldn't wait to long to get it out of the tank.

Easier said then done. They are too small to fool with it right now.

Yep, that's aiptasia. I would try and get rid of it ASAP before it spreads.

A friend of mine ended up with some aiptasia on his rock, so I told him to get a peppermint shrimp. He did, and they are gone now Though I have heard that some people don't have such luck.

I belive its only the female peppermint shrimp that eat it. If you get males, they wont touch it. Also, Camel Shrimp are mistaken for Peppermint shrimp all the time. Some LFS sell Camel Shrimp as Peppermint shrimp. Some LFS dont know the difference ( Belive it or not ). They sell the Camel shrimp as Peppermints because that was the way that it was sold to them. Camel shrimp wont touch it. Get yourself some Aiptasia-X or Joes Juice and be done with it.

Thanks for all the input. So its just this one head right now and its very very small. How fast will this spread? If I have to get aiptasia-X or Simular i will end up having to wait a few days for it to come in. The lemon juice trick should work too right?

Another ftrick that works is to mix a little salt water to as high a salinity it will go - super saturated - and inject this into the body of aiptasia

(bump)
I found this growing in my tank this week. It is about a quarter inch across. There is another head elsewhere in the tank as well, but so far I only see the two. I just turned the corner on an epic six month algae battle, so it would make sense that a plague of aiptasia would follow up. Always exciting in this hobby. I can't tell for sure because it is small, and sorry about the photo, but any input on wether this is what I fear it might be? |

I'm going to make a little hollow dome out of two part epoxy and seal the mother up with it, since that is what I have on hand.

Aiptasia Control is an amazing product. Comes with a syringe and it shrivels those things up instantly.

I only have these two tiny ones right now so I'm hoping I can take care of it right now and not get to that point. We'll see!

I agree, it looks like Aptasia. I would give it a lemon juice enema and see how it likes that.
