You should add berghia nudibranchs to the list.

Well, hopefully a moderator will see this and add the nudis to the list.... I can't edit it

Thanks for sharing that though!!!

How power-head safe is the berghia? My small system is run by them, and I'd have a hard time getting rid of or otherwise blocking them.

1 Pepei, 24gallon Nanocube overrun with dozens of aiptasia. 2 days. No aiptasia. Peppis rule!

I'd love to put peppermints in both of my tanks, and will do it on one of them. But the other tank has a fuzzy dwarf lion. So.... I may be stuck with tracking down the Berghia nudis if I can find them locally. I'd only need one or two.

Peppermint shrimp have always worked for me. Although from what I've read its important to make sure the peppermints you get are from Florida, as they are the only ones that will eat aiptasia. There are some invert suppliers on the web that are out of Florida, so they aren't hard to find. I put 3-4 in a 72g tank.

My copperband has also demolished my aiptasia, as well.

If you go the berghia route, get at least two. They will mate and have babies and will decimate the aiptasia. If u only get one, it will take a loooooong time depending on ur infestation

This method is effective... but hard on the coral and other things on the liverock... that and removing the live from the term... and just makes it ... well, a rock.

lol

THIS poll, after the Nudi's get added to the list, SHOULD be a sticky. 15 threads a month to say, 'What are these, and how do I get rid of them!?' and simply a 'sticky:yes' click would solve the onslaught of desperate reefers trying to kill of the weeds.

But, dont they ONLY eat aptasia? And they all die off after the weeds are gone? Isn't that on the same plane as using fish to cycle? "Do your job, and die" mentallity doesn't sit well with me.

You can trade them around your reef club as janitors for hire lol.

They also don't have a huge lifecycle anyways, so it isn't like you are dooming the little critter to a severely shortened lifespan.

If it's just a few, bury them under mounds of kalk paste. Problem solved.

Oh, I didn't realize they only lived a short time... but still... especially if they breed... that is hundreds of little lives... expendable little lives...

okay, too melodramatic... but what about the bio-load of the mass nudi-death? Especially if they did breed.

One of the last frags I bought had one on the rock that came with it. I simply pulled the frag out and broke that piece of rock off with a pair of vice grips. Done! Way back when I had some in the tank and injected them with kalk and that got rid of them.

In my situation the lil punks have gone reproductive on me, so solutions that require rock removal wouldn't work for me. They are in the frag tank, on frag plugs, on the rock, on the glass.

When I think I have maybe a dozen.... I find another dozen...

Hopefully I can pick up some of the nudis soon.

I had some hijack in on some LFS live rock for my nano. After 3 weeks they quadrupled. I tried aptaisia X but couldn't seem to keep up with them multiplying. I then ordered two peppermint shrimp and together we got them all.

It doesn't sound like you've ever had them, as you do not end up with hundreds of them. You are lucky if they reproduce enough to take care of a moderate aiptasia problem. If breeding berghias were that easy, they would not be so hard to find to purchase. Very few vendors carry them. You can also check the RC livestock selling and you will not find very many for sale.

It all depends on how you look at some of the things we put or find in our tank. Why kill aiptasia? They are alive as well, don't they deserve the same chances at life a berghia nudi does? Most would say no, b/c they are undesirable in our tanks so they deserve the death penalty. Sorry, but if some berghias die b/c they couldn't find enough aips to eat, I'm not going to lose much sleep. Matter of fact I will be happy b/c that means they've done their job. Maybe its just me, but I don't equate the value of the berghias the same that I've placed on my fish, corals, feather dusters, etc

When my tank was clear of aips, I caught as many berghias I could find (I started with 2) and traded them back to my LFS, and I know most of the babies didn't make it....and that's okay

I took a combination approach on a 55 that was quite well infested. Copperband, peppermint shrimp and Aptasia X. The peps and copperband got most of them, hit the rest with Aptasia X.
