Substrate Question
What is the consenus on DSB vs 1-2" sand beds - what do most people have?
I am considering a shallow sand bed for a 90' reef tank - starting as FOWLR and moving on eventually... I have read how to create both and the benefits but wanted to see what people suggested Thanks Russ |

There is no consensus on DSB. If you have researched the benefits for both, then you should make a decision that feels right to you. I personally tend to split things down the middle... not to shallow, but not too deep either.

in the process of switching from a DSB to about a 1-2" sandbed.
My reasoning is that your DSB can crash and it does need to be rebuilt after a number of years. In my case, 8 years, maybe longer than it should be, but I have decided to go with some "sand-sifting" CUC members to keep it clean. My wife also doesn't like the "dirty" look of the DSB. Not the top layer, but the layers underneath that you can see through the glass... And as jl said, it is preference...
