The flow is more dispersed without them and that is what most people like.

Both of mine are still in the box. I think its for a more direct flow.

I run with them off but have used plastic gutter guard to make a fish guard for the front of my Koralia 4s. I just wasn't comfortable with the size of the opening in the front of them especially since I shut them down for feedings and maitenance.

But without it you really can't shut the pump off at night. You need some guard to prevent fish from going in when the pump is off so I put it on.

Yes fish could get in there, but there has been a few threads that I've read that suggest keeping the flow on 24/7 is the best for your tank. The surface of the ocean may be a little calmer at night than in the day, but the under water currents are just as strong at night. I have my guards off, but I run my Korallias constant

I had mine off forever, then I put them on and I don't notice much difference. I think I am going to remove them again just because they seem to catch a lot of stuff on the grates. I've never had a fish get in the Koralia.
I guess if I was to walk into a big fan i'd expect to get pretty beat up. I figure the fish should feel the same way

There's no reason to turn your pumps off at night unless you REALLY need to save a couple pennies on electric, but if you need those pennies that bad, you should not be in this hobby.
