How to weed cheto algae

I think it is cheto algae. The green curly algae that grows in the sump.

Anyway, it has grown so large that it is starting to come slightly out of the water. I do not know anyone with a saltwater tank, so I called the nearest store (about 40 minutes away) and they said they would take some if I wanted to get rid of it.

How do I trim it? I was thinking just take scissors right down the middle and cut it in half. Is that they way to go or should I not cut? I don't want to accidentally kill what I keep by doing it wrong. I would say that it is about as large as two one gallon jugs.

you cant just pull it out with your fingers? It should just come out in big chunks.

I usually just reach in and pull out a softball sized chunk. Its pretty hard to hurt that stuff.

Do a small water change, move the whole ball into the waterchange bucket and pull it apart. Swish the part you're going to keep in the water to remove detritus and return it to the tank. Take the rest to your LFS for store credit and let them deal with the dirty water .

(If you're really compulsive catch the pods, worms and ministars in the dirty water first and return them to your tank. Not that I would do anything like that )

Just grab a handful and pull it out.
If you belong to any clubs, people are always looking for some.
I usually give it away.

Agu is right on, best way......and cheato grows from it ends....so the more ends you have the faster it grows, and more you have the more you get rid of and the more nutients you export.....I think you get the point.

Do not use electric hedge trimmers in the tank however. Even on a GFCI they make a mess.

It is really hard to damage Chaeto. It takes a licking but keeps on ticking.
