Powerheads...Koralia???????

Currently I have a Maxi Jet 1200 in my 29gal tank. Since I have started some Corals,I have been thinking about a different powerhead.

Would a Hydor Koralia #2 be enough for a 29gal?
Any thoughts on Koralia's in general would be appreciated.

The other pump I thought about was a SEIO 320.
I noticed it in Dr Fosters and was wondering anybody try it yet?

Koralias are like cheaper less powerfull versions of tunze pumps. the three main pumps you hear of people using are maxi jets, koralia, and tunze. maxi jets are junky, but do last forever and get the job done. Koralias are nice in that they dont just shoot a direct stream of water at things. its more of a wider wave of water. and tunze are like kick but versions of koralias. i use koralias because i cant afford tunze. So IMO koralias are good pumps. Ive never had any problems. for your tank id probably go with at least a koralia 3 if thats going to be your only water movement. or better yet get two koralia 2s. as for the seio, im assuming that for that price they probably arent the best pumps. they probably only shoot a narrow stream of water. so just go with koralias.

100% ,thanks

I also have a hob filter and hob skimmer which I assume gives me a little more movement. The filter is small, like only 160gph. I really only have it to collect any big junk in the water.

Would you still get 2 #2's?

The K3's are the exact same size as the K2's so don't let that dissuade you from getting a K3.

why not use a "piece of junk" 1200 maxijet with the MOD prop kit and it will blow the korilias and the tunze out of the water (price too!).. Or "piece of junk" 400 maxijet with the MOD prop kit and you get a decent flow in a 29gal..

maxijets are good powerheads, but they put out a lot of heat compared to the koralias. IIRC, they consume roughly 2x the wattage to move the same volume of water. I'm stretching my memory on that figure, but I know they suck more power and my MJ1200 in my LR cooking bucket keeps temps above 85.

Rather than one powerhead, I'd get a pair. With 2 you can put them on opposite sides of the tank and aim them so that their streams interact to cause turbulence.

I have a pair of K2's in my 33g cube aimed roughly at one another from opposite corners. I also have a K1 in another corner to churn things up. A pair of K2s would be great for that tank. You'd then have your MJ for a back up or for special duty stuff like an ATO, circulation behind the LR, circulation in a water change bucket, etc.

2s are junk, go for a k3 with the maxi-jet you already have and you wont be disappointed, if you go for a k2 you will, just my view on k2s

I think a K3 might be a bit much for a 29g. Is it a SPS tank?

You can use the maxi-mod in the koralia as well and still get the wide angle stream. A bit much flow though IMO.

For the OP, I have two k4's, a k2 and k3 (controllables) and love them as a good bang for the buck quality PH. If I had the money to blow, I would probably have gotten Tunze or even a Vortech for the controllability. As it is, the koralia controller is somewhat limited, but has been pretty good all things considered.

Probably go with a k3 in the 29, or 2 -k2's.

leeit2me,
I was actually going to do exactly what you stated
Reason/s I was looking into other options..............
until 3 weeks ago I did not have any Corals,it was a FOWLR tank
Although the suction cup holder on the Maxi Jet is ok, I did have it fall down the glass before. With the fish it wasn't that bad of an experience, but I would hate to have it fall now and have it blasting at a coral.
So I am looking at a pump with magnetic holder:ie the Koralia.
Although I can get magnetic holder for the MJ,it cost $24.99 & the upgrade kit cost $11.99 = $36.98
Currently Fosters is running Koralia's for a #2 @ $28.19 & a #3 @ $32.99.
It's purely a cost factor.

I don't know,I'm a idiot.
I guess.
I currently have as follows:

Mushrooms
Favia Brain
Some Zoas
Star Polyups
Trumpet Coral
Blue Xenia (I think) Wife bought it Sunday & the guy told her it was a Clove Coral

Thanks everyone for the imput.Guess I need to make a decision. I really thought about taking the MJ out all together though, and was only going to run 1 pump ....bad????good???

I like the Hydors. In my 55g, I have 3 K3s and a pair of nanos. I like the idea of smaller and more of them for more even flow instead of one monster blowing water at one general area. What I did was put the K3s behind the rocks at the back where they wouldn't be seen, and the Nanos at the front in the top corners, so they didn't obscure the view of the fishies.

I have two modded MaxiJet 1200s and they move a lot of water. I was going to get two Koralias, but tried the generic Sun Suns instead. I got both the Sun Suns for less than one Koralia 4 and they work just as well.

I didn't like the noise the generics produced. And I had a modded Maxi 800, and it was much louder too.

Yea,like I said I thought about just getting the mod,but I think I would feel better with a magnetic holder. That is an additional $24.99
For that I can just get another pump.
I don't think I have a flow problem,maybe just better direction

I bought a resun from ebay and the thing works pretty good. Im not sure of how long itas going to last but from what ive seen so far i like it better than the koralia's i have. Especially for less than half the price of a Koralia.

I've seen 3 MJ 900's with the Eco-mod have the impeller blown out through the back of the housing! My friend used to swear by them and always dissed me for running Korallias, but now he's been asking me if I'm selling them now! I've had a K-3 and K-1 in my tanks for over 2 years with no problems. I'm opting for the new CoralVue Dual Prop powerhead that's rated at 1500gph just to get flow up where it needs to be in my 54gal.
