pair of mp10's in a 75g?

Will two mp10's running centered on each half (on back) provide enough flow for a 75g?

The plan is to have a 75g (48x18x21), "divided" in half by a centered overflow. then have each "half" centered with its own mp10.

Im hoping the short throw of the mp10 would be perfect for each 18x24" area that it is responsible for.

The tank will be an open aquascape, no rock walls, just some hills/islands, with plenty of swimming space.

mp20's are a tough sell as they would make the tank stick out too far from the wall. the 2.25 clearance is already distasteful.

thanks

The MP20 dry side is only 1/4" longer than the MP10. I'd use a pair of MP20s over the MP10s with that sized tank.

This is a tough call. Scott's right that technically the MP20 could be a better match based on the size of the tank. Both the MP10 and MP20 stick out from the tank about the same length (within 1/4" or so of each other), but the MP10 dry side's diameter is a lot less which does make it appear smaller. However, if the issue is looks (based on your comment that the sticking out is 'distasteful') then I don't think you'd have to worry about either one considering they would be installed on the back of the tank where you won't be able to see them.

Another thing to consider is whether or not you're keeping SPS. If you are then I'd probably steer you toward the MP20's with the possibility of upgrading. Otherwise MP10's may be ok.

Thanks tim and scott,

if the mp20 is just a 1/4" longer why does it need an extra 3/4" clearance? if this wasnt the case, the 20 may be the way to go.

how do you think the combination of 2 tunze (am I allowed to say that :0) 6045's with the mp10's would compare to just 2 mp20's?

I have 2 MP20s and one MP40 on the back of a 180G. Be sure you leave yourself enough working room to get back there if you ever need to get at the dry sides.

Although I have seen them, I dont have first hand exp with the MP10. I would think with the wider opening and higher GPH, the MP20 would cover the 75G better, but again, I never used an MP10. The other benefit as Tim mentioned is the MP20 can be very easily upgraded to an MP40W if you want to do that down the road.

You guys have me reconsidering.

will 2 mp20's be sufficient flow in a 75g for whatever I decide to do? If it is, then the benefit of space inside the tank may outweigh the drawback of the space needed outside the tank.

Scott, are the 3 mps all you have on your tank other than return? if so, how is the tanks flow with just the 2 mp20s on? curious how they fare alone as a pair in a much larger tank.

Yes, the Vortechs are my only source of display flow other than my return flow which is low. A 180 is a 6x2x2 tank. 2 MP20s would not be enough for a tank that size. Each pump is good for a 2' cube or so. I think 2 would be pretty good on a 75G. I find the MP20s work well in lagoon mode Vs the reefcrest that most prefer with MP40s. In lagooon mode, they spend more time in the higher flow cure and push more water that way.

I have a Mp40w in my 75g RR. I have a 700gph return pump and I added in a Tunze 6045 on the opposite side. I am planning on adding in another Vortech, possibly a Mp20 since I have the Mp20 driver and an extra wetside, just need the dry side.

I am running my 75g BB and need TONS of flow!

My suggestion would be to do at least 2 Mp20's, you can always upgrade them to the Mp40w for about $129.99 each. The Mp10's are not upgradeable. But are nice for 50g or smaller setups.

Brad
