Blue throat triggers...Jumpers??
Just got one. He already jumped once. Luckily I was watching him when he did and tossed him back in.
What's your experience?

I have had one for over a year, he has never jumped once. He doesn't even ever really get close to the surface. Is another fish or something "spooking" the fish?

I have heard of them being jumpers, especially when spooked. But don't think it is super common.

He's all alone in a 50g but it's possible I may have spooked him looking in to check him out.

Mine at feeding time has breached the surface... It still freaks me out when he does his whale imitation

Any fish will jump if sufficiently scared or stimulated. A trigger fish is a muscular, strong fish so when it jumps it can get pretty far. I would definitely recommend a cover over your tanks. I keep my blue throat's tank covered with eggcrate.

I have a male/female pair of Blue Jaws. The other night, I heard a HUGE splash, ran in and turned on the room lighting. All I could see what a huge cloud of sand. I'm sure it was the male trigger. Needless to say, I made sure to find all my fish, in the tank, before my heart started beating again.
Someone else, here on RC, just had a male Blue Jaw jump, and die. Triggers jumping is actually pretty common, especially if they're spooked. |
