Question Cleaning sand for Refugium

I am starting a new tank 55gal 48x12x21. I am wanting to use my old 29gal for the refuge. It had a DSB, and I'm wanting to reuse the sand. I know the bottom of this sand is filled with nitrates. So I wanted to know if there is a way to filter or clean the sand so I can reuse it.

What I did for my sand when I was moving and tank was made extra saltwater up to do a water change for the new tank and washed the old sand in the old salt water. This way you don't kill any of the bacteria in the sand and remove the detrius.
