ID this sea star please

I found this in my sump/refugium a few months ago. It has gotten bigger and I was wondering what it is exactly and can I add it to my 150g reef. Is it safe to add to my display tank?

top star

It's a brittle star. It's hard to tell from the pic. If it's green in color then you might not want it in your tank. I believe the rest of them are considered a safe part of the clean up crew.check out this link

I have a black/brown one that's ~14" who is a model citizen in my reef tank, like stated earlier if it's green you should probably keep it in the sump.

it's a fine addition to your clean up crew.

the green ones tend to eat things (your fish) when they grow larger. That appears to be a black brittle star- a fine addition to your tank

I have one in my tank that looks like this. I have green and red brittlestars also and I don't think they bother anything. I feed them regularly prawn though.

we have a 13" Yellow / Green one - we keep him hand fed about every 3 days with Krill - he loves it... The only issue we ever had was if he gets really hungry he will take an aggressive stance perched up on a couple of rocks laying in wait... He has attacked a couple of Turbo snails and managed to pull them out and munch on them. I have saved a couple from his clutches... this is when the Krill came into play and no problems since.

They are safe. I have one. Feed him once a week to keep him happy.
