Chaeto Problems?

Hi,

My Chaeto is pretty nasty looking in my fuge. There are still tons of critters in there and it still floats, but it is not the bright green color that I am used to. I have it under dual 6500 floods from the Home Depot. Here are some pics. I am thinking of tossing it and starting over. Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks!

Chaeto needs to be rotating around from a powerhead or rotated by hand daily.
Also looks like you have hair algae in your fuge.
I'd start by rinsing the chaeto out in a bucket of saltwater to get all that gunk out.

I second that, the chaeto is not the problem, it is the other algae that is on it. It is collecting the floating crap, and because it is sitting still, the light is just producing green sludge on the chaeto.

Get that puppy rolling!

ps: looks like you have a strong surface tension there too. Is your water lever higher than the overflow from your fuge, or... something? Doesn't seem to be enough flow at the suface to break the surface tension ... on the surface...

Did I say surface enough? lol

OK, I definitely can get more flow through there. I have a small powerhead in there and can get a bigger one. I will pull the whole ball out and clean out the algae.

Thanks again for all of your help!

Cut away the discolored junk at the water surface. You should have nice green growth beneath that. Giving it an occasional roll is a good idea, but daily shouldn't be necessary.
