Anyone using durso standpipes? Help!

A durso standpipe set up came with the tank I purchased. This is not a DIY standpipe. Look like a factory product.

My question is how to properly fit this Durso drain to my bulkhead.
The Durso is a slip fit and so is my bulkhead. Cool.

Doesnt look like it would seal well just hand tightened and I dont want to cement it.

Do you guys use and silicone or something to seal this????

Thanks!

You can telflon it if you want, I just leave it be with no seal though, no big deal.

Are you hard plumbing the drains or using plastic tubing? How is the overflow set up?

Make sure the standpipe is the correct height. Glue it into place. On the other side of the bulkhead glue in a barb fitting. Use plastic tubing for the rest of the plumbing. If you need to take it out you pull the whole bulkhead.

Or you can convert the standpipe to a threaded fitting, get a new bulkhead, and probably have to do the same thing because you cant turn it inside the overflow box.

I've been running mine for year just slip fit (no glue, no tape, etc). Even if it did pull some water from around the connection, no big deal.

One advantage of not being glued is when the fish go into the overflow, can just pull the standpipe to fit a net in.

I was able to put a few spins of teflon tape on mine and push it in snug just for that " Secure" feeling but it really wasn't needed. Dont glue it together if you ever plan on taking it apart for cleaning or the like. Never had a problem with them pushed in on any of the tanks I used them on

I have never put tape or glue on mine and had no problems. I agree with above statements, it does make it nice to pull the pipe to get a fish in the overflow, or to clean the overflow from time to time.

+1 on not gluing. check the durso website and make sure you get the right size pipe(use the next size up from your bulkhead size and fit it with a reducer). It helps with keeping it quiet. I also use ball valves on my pverflow pipes to help "tune" the noise. Just a suggestion.

No! No! No!

Don't glue the slip joint standpipe into the overflow. It just slips into place - it doesn't even need to be tight... If you ever need to get a fish or other critter out of your overflow box, just turn off your return pump, put a filter sock or netting over the other end of the overflow pipe/tubing in your sump, and gently wiggle the durso standpipe out...it'll sound like a toilet flushing, but whatever is in your overflow that shouldn't be there, will wind up safely in the sock below...I've done that several times with a 6-line wrasse!

That's also how you remove your standpipe for cleaning...get all that nasty goop, algae and aiptasia off it every 6 months or so.

As for the proper height, most commercial dursos that I have owned are adjustable. They raise up and down like a trombone slide so you can adjust for the proper height.

Thanks guys.
The system is "hard plumbed".
I wasn't going to glue it but I was considering a light silicone seal. Just seems like there should be something there. But...I guess I will just twist it in and go with it.
Yes the pipe is adjustable like a trombone. I will dial it in.
Thanks again for all the great advice.

If you want to put anything in there, use plumber's silicone "grease"...I use it on all my unions. It's not really "grease" - it's a clear silicone paste that you can lightly smear on and it will stay. It makes things come apart easler down the road.

I just slipped mine in there also. I didn't use any glue. There is no pressure so you don't really need glue.
