acapora whitening

hi
i manage to get a half alive acapora to try my luck with sps
since it was kinda dying at the lfs whitening already so i thought id try to propagate and learn on sps

anyways after a few days of mounting it in a fairly moderate waterflow direct under mh
it got its original colour back then i read that they require high waterflow
so rearranged it so it sit directly near the wavemmaker
as of today it started to become white again

can some1 inform me y this would happen or shoyld i just place into the original location and start from there?

I would place it into the original place -- every coral requires a different amount of flow, so I would just do what seems to make it happiest.

SPS requires a good amount of flow to help with oxygen exchange, etc, but that's probably what you started off with.

I have some acropora under fairly low flow and it seems to be doing just fine.

What was its polyp extension like in its original spot in the tank versus where it is in the tank now? Another thing to not is that high flow does not mean a powerhead blowing full blast directly at the piece. Is this what is happening?

Yeah, if you can feel the flow with your hand it usually is too much. Although they love to have powerheads directed at them, it needs to be far enough away that you can't easily feel it pushing on your hand.

yeah that exactly whats happening hence ive put it back to original spot
as polyp didnt really see any
now this morning the tips are kind white as well

so sps corals are difficult compared to softies etc
ill see how this one goes and leave it till i get a far greater experience

cheers

If they don't get high flow they will grow in pretty odd shapes. If you're using a koralia or powerhead with wide flow you can use one or two powerheads that will distribute flow wide enough for all the acros to get hit.
