Boiled Rock
Ok, so I want to add some more rock to my tank. It is dried rock that was boiled before I took it. Do I still have to cure it or can I put it directly in my tank. Take in mind it was once live rock that had sat around in the sun over the summer, and completely dried out and died off. He boiled it then scrubbed it. It's clean as a whistle. Can I add it or should I cure it?
Thanks in advance!

I would be careful if the rock is really porous. There are lots of hole holding dead organic matter that is impossible to get to wash out. If you just put this straight into your tank, you run the risk of an ammonia spike.
If your tank is well established, you could consider just adding the rock to your tank slowly and monitor for a spike. |

I'd add it slow as well if you're adding to an established tank.

How much are you wanting to add compared to how much you have? (ie are you doubling the total rock you have in the tank with this new addition?) I wouldn't worry about it much on an established tank unless you are adding what will be a large percentage of your total.

It is definitely not because I need more rock, I just got a good deal on it and yes it is very porous and will be put into an established tank. I just want to create some more caverns and places for frags. Basically for aesthetics. I might add some small pieces to see how the tank handles it, but will probably end up curing the rest of it because I do not want an ammonia spike. Thanks to all who responded.

How much rock do you have? How much are you adding? How big is your tank? I wouldn't add any more than 10% at a time with 6-8 weeks in between... |

I don't know exactly how much rock i have because well honestly i forget. I would say at least 200 lbs. if not more of rock in the tank already. I am probably better off just curing it and waiting the time for it to cure than having to deal with outbreaks of any kind.
