DJ america power strips and timers

For those of you who use the DJ America power strips (or anything similar), how do you use timers with them?

I've got a small rats nest under my tank that I'd like to clean up, but timers for lighting are too convenient to give up (except for the whole blocking 2 outlets deal).

I believe you can get a short extension cord (or make your own if you know how to) and use plug the digital timer into the DJ strip. The 1-2' extension will just allow you to mount them to a wall or wherever you want and you won't have the issues of them not fitting on the actual strip. Then you can mount the strip and have the power toggle button be like a light switch. Shut power off to the timer... but if the timer has batteries, it won't loose it's setting or get off track like the non-digital types do.

I think that made sense to me.... I used them years and years ago on my smaller tank. They were nice for a cheaper alternative to a controller. This is how I recall having mine work.
