1 or 2 Vortech MP-40W?
I have a 120g, 4x2x2.
I want to upgrade my flow. I currently have 2 K4s, and 3 maxijet 1200s. I want to ditch these and add one or two Vortech MP40W2. My question is, do I need one or two? I'm thinking with only four foot of total tank length, one MP40W and one K4 would more than enough. It will be a SPS dominated reef. If cost wasn't an issue, I would get two and be done with it. But obviously their pricey, so if I don't need both, I will be happy with one. I don't want sufficient flow, I want more than enough. Will one MP40 and one K4 be "more than enough"? Thank you for any opinions or suggestions. Last edited by Dutch06; 10/06/2009 at 10:32 PM. |

Personally on a 120g if you are making it SPS dominated I would probably go with 2 MP40w's. Not just for the overall flow, but for the ability to randomize it (going with master / slave configs). If you have any plans to upgrade to a larger tank in the future you would still be able to use these two pumps as well. You could also always go with an MP40w and an MP20 to save some bucks. If yo don't feel like it's enough flow you can turn the MP20 into an MP40w for the difference in cost of the two.

I would go with 2 mp40w's. I have 2 on my 90g and love it. The flow will definately be more than enough. The flow patterns also depend on your rockwork and pump placement. But 2 will be what you are looking for.

where and in what configuration do you guys have your dual mp40's set up? same height same side of the tank? if so, both on reef crest? opposite ends? one front and one back?
thanks!

I agree with the above and would go for 2x MP40.
Do you have any objection to placing them on both ends? I'd put one on one side with short pulse creating a wave. The other I'd put on the other side on reefcrest. On on the side with pulse and center in the back might work as well. Picture of your rockwork? If you hit the Ecotech forum here on RC, they'll give you some very specific ideas if you supply details.

I have 2 MP40W's on my 120 SPS dominated. Full bore short pulse for a nice wave and switch a few times a week to reefcrest. I have them on opposite ends to increase the wave, but also had them on the same side with pretty much the same effect. I would suggest pick one up now if money is tight, and save for another new one, or watch the used goods forum.
