I personally have not used one, but I would say 99% of people that use them love them. It is just whether or not you are willing to fork over $420 for a powerhead.

I LOVE mine, even with the issues I've had with it (it's a Gen1). Planning on getting another one for the tank upgrade.

Great pump!....it does suck that the MP40 is $400 but once you have one and you get over the cost it's the best pump out there (Tunze Stream pumps are it's = in price and performance) It's all about what you need in flow. You can aim a Tunze but you have a bit of an eye sore of a pump in your tank. The vortech has a very very wide flow pattern and has a killer under tow.

I love mine! I have two in my 100gl and they do a great job!

Look around the selling forums as you may be able to find them used at discounted prices. I purchased one new and another slightly used for about the price of a retail one. Lots of great deals out there if you look hard enough.

I love mine, thinking about adding a second. The battery backup provides a peace of mind unlike any other.

If you're worried about noise don't get an MP10. My MP10 is significantly louder than my MP20. The MP20 is pretty quiet.

Good pumps over all with the exception of price.

About the noise, I find you have to adjust the turnover to the lowest, move the wetside so its silent, adjust the turnover a bit higher, then adjust again (if needed), then turn it all the way up and adjust it again. It can be at 100% and be silent, but if it goes to 40-50% it may crackle like crazy but at the lowest% it can be silent again. Just change the speed and adjust until its silent throughout the entire range of speed.

For a 48x18x18 rimless, LPS,anemone, zoas and softie dominated tank would you guys recommend the vortechs?

I had in mind the MP20s

Start with one and get a second one when money permits then the battery back up.

I just don't have an idea of how the flow is. My K4s are not perfect. Sort of hard to get the pattern right. Seems without the ability to aim it would be hard to get the right flow in the tank..... yet everyone raves about how good the flow is. So it is hard to picture the flow pattern. My LFS has one on a tank, but obviously I din't stick my hand in the tank to play with it.

Obviously I would not want one just for the flow pattern, all the controlability would be sweet.

I have four in my tank and I love them. Just like anything you can get one that is defective but they have the best customer support too.

I use a pair of MP40Ws in my 350G tank - in fact that's all I use to supplement the returns at night... during the daytime, I add a 4600gph closed loop.

Works for me.

I have a mp20 on same dims tank, works great, though I have it tuned way down.
My only issue is I'd like to bump it in flow, but I'll be blasting whats near it.
So one doesn't quite hit all dead spots.
Ideally 2 would be great, and even better 2x mp40's dialed to each other.
But I think you could get by one one mp20 for quite a while.
Mine is dead silent, but again, tuned way down.

MP40w and love it. At first it seemed like a reduction in flow over what I had previous, but the alternating flow really helps to keep particles suspended. The corals really seem to like the surging flow and ebb's. Definately worth it.
