Diamond Goby is a super jumping bean!

I just bought a dimond goby and he literally jumped out of my QT tank when I turned on the light. I guess he freaked out and leaped out of the tank and landed on the floor as if he was dead. I would say he leaped about maybe a foot over my tank and hit the concrete floor...and i thought he was a goner. I quickly threw him back in my QT tank and he was floating upside down motionless, just his jaw is gapping for air slowly. Then a few seconds later, he jumped again right through the egg crates! He's a large fella about 6-7" long...

My question is....how has anyone able to keep this fish without having to put a lid on the tank? I have T-5's on my tank and I cannot afford to keep it covered.
Egg crates failed...

Any thoughts?

Gobbies, blenies, jawfish, wrasses are all known jumpers and should have a lid when keeping them. Eggcrate doesn't keep them in, even the larger ones.

I was going to buy one but the online vendor was out of stock and they had longfin sleeper goby instead so I ordered one. It has not made any attempt to jump at all and almost OCD sifting all day.

I've had my Diamond for some time now, the only time he tried to jump out of anything was when I was acclimating him because I scared him when the lights went on, my tank is open top and I haven't had any problems since.

Thanks for all the replies everyone! Can someone tell me where I can buy a fine lid without taking away any of the light's effect?

I can't leave my tank covered since I have heating issues with my T-5s.

i just got a custom glass lid to go over my tank, only 20 dollars and because it raises the temp i didnt need to get a heater. you can go 2 lowes and just get window screening to put on, it wont really affect it that much, neither will glass except raise the temp
