yes, to help uptake ammonia, and cheato does need some light to grow. I'm just wondering if copper will kill the cheato.

Copper will kill cheato. It is basically a poison that fish have a higher tolerance to than plants and microbes.

Why do you want cheato to uptake ammonia?

Why not nitrification bacteria?

Well I didn't want to get all technical but most types of algae will consume ammonia if present before nitrate & phosphate .

Using algae to uptake the ammonia there isn't a worry about nitrate buildup because there's no conversion from ammonia to nitrite to nitrate.
