Making your own top off water

Can one make their own top off water using "Prime" to remove Chlorine, Chloramine, & Ammonia, then running the water through a filter using a generous amount of Activated Carbon. And if so, how long would the Activated Carbon be effective at purifiying the water -or more precisely the approximate ratio of gallons produced vs. carbon amount usage? I would be using a bare 10 gallon tank to do. This would be strictly for top off water.

Was wondering how pure this would make the water vs. using an RODI unit?

Not pure enough over the long term. Save the money you'll spend on chemicals/carbon and buy distilled water if an RO/DI isn't in your budget.

Thanks "Agu", if I get an RODI unit, on average how often does one have to replace the media within an RODI unit. This would based on the average top off water for a 75 gal & a 55 gal. aquarium, and are RODI units fairly durable & reliable?

Since your water quality sucks so bad there then I would expect you to have to replace your prefilters every 4 or 5 months. The DI will likely be replaced every month or two and the membrane longevity will depend greatly on how well you keep up the prefilters.
