Anyone had sucess with a trigger in a reef?

I am wondering if anyone has had any sucess with any sort of trigger fish in a reef tank? If so, what type of trigger, lengthof time, how large was the tank and what did you keep in the tank in regards to other fish and invertebrate life?

I have had good luck with a Blue Jaw Trigger in my reef. He is a great fish that does not bother any other fish or any of the corals.

I have a small BlueJaw who is new. I've had a Niger Trigger in the tank for about 6 months. He's a model citizen for now. I don't have any shrimp though although I will add some again at some point.

I just removed my Crosshatch. It never bothered a coral but I got tired of waking up to find the half-eaten carcasses of my fish lying among them.

Hey dw- how goes it? I see a 150 TBS in the works eh? you'll have to start a thread again.

Sargassum trigger would be the suggestion i would make. They are similar to anthias in that they feed in the water column and not for motile inverts.

Nigers and Blue Jaws are the most common, and generally the ones that are considered reef possible. I believe most triggers will leave corals alone, but can/will eat inverts. The more aggressive ones may also go after fish. Triggers are viewed in much the same way angels are.

I have been away from the hobby for about two years. I moved schools two years ago and took my TBS reef with me and it turned out to be a disaster. In addition, I sold off my 75 gallon fish only. The district accidentally reprogrammed my thermostat in my old room and killed the AC during the summer, I came back from being gone a week to a tank with 90+ degree temps and 1/2 the water evaporated. I got that fixed but the tank was on the edge of crashing and I had to move it to the new school. I wanted to put the tank in my room and the director wanted it out in our foyer which was a BAD location. It was not climate controlled and was out in the open and a ways away from my room. I ended up putting it in the foyer and it crashed hard, it took a nose dive I couldn’t pull it out of. I could have saved it if it was near me in my room. Anyways, the tank died.

I have been trying to leave this school and get back to my old one but they wont let me leave......I am pretty certain I will be able to at the end of this year and I plan to start a new tank and a new mega TBS thread

I now have a small 29 gallon FOWLR tank with a little Clarkii and three smal azure damsels.

I had a 4" Bluejaw for 8 - 12 months. It was a while ago, so I forget exactly how long I had it. It was in with BL hermits, snails, Skunk Cleaners and a CBS and didn't bother any of them. It was also in with many different types of corals. One day it just stopped eatting and a few days later it wouldn't even come out of the rocks until I never saw it again. So, the cleanup crew must have taken care of it. It was a cool fish and bothered nothing. As others have said, they are planktivores. This doesn't mean that all will be OK, but I believe most are. HTH

The niger trigger that I had was a good citizen for about a year, then he began eating crabs and harrasing the smaller fish. He was easy to catch because he was so greedy I was able to grab him lightly with my hand with food in it. I have a 240gl tank.

I had few. I love their character.
Pinktail - was a bit aggressive to small fish.
Crosshatch - big and clumsy, broke some sps corals. No aggression to other fish.
Sargassum trigger - a great and quiet fish and my favorite...

+1 for a blue jaw. I have been thinking of getting one for the past few months. Does anyone know what other fish blue jaws are/are not compatible with. I have a skunk cleaner, coral banded, lemon and coral beauty angels, naso tang, yellow tang, maroon clown, blenny, cardinal, and a firefish.
Thanks.

I had a male Hawaiian blue jaw in my 100 (5' long) for 2 years before I downgraded

Traded back to LFS because I felt the 100 was already too small. Never bothered anything in the tank (including my army of peppermint shrimp) but he bit me a few times when I stuck my hand in for various reasons. Shy for the first month but then became by far the most active fish. If I ever get a bigger tank again I'd love to get a pair.
