newbie. which fish can i put in my tank

hey guys, well i just got into the hobby , i am about to get my tank up and running , and it will be live rock and sand, for a good 3 months for a good cycle, i am using coralife salt, and have my own ro/di unit, i have a 40 gallon breeder with a 20 gallon sump.

my question is, which tangs can i put into my tank,

from all the fish, tangs are my favorite, i was told i can get a blue hippo and a yellow tang, now i do not want the fish to get stressed because they do not have enough space to swim and such.

i plan on haveing a pair of

percula clowns
a blue hippo tang
yellow tang.
some hermit crap, a coral banded shrimp,
possibly a watchman goby.
there is a sand spitting goby my girlfriend wants, so thats a possibility.

which other tangs can i put in.

i really love the naso tang, but he will be too big, and i do not want to stress him and kill him, seing as these fish are in a decline of being found, and i dont want to be the ******* to kill one.

but can i put a

Yellow Belly Regal Blue Tang

Powder Brown Tang

Whitecheek Tang or a

convict tang

in my 40 gallon?.

please dont tell that that's way too many fish, i am not totally out of this hobby i know not to overpopulate the tank, i only want to know which ones are possible to put into my tank, seeing as these are my favorite out of the tangs that i want.

thanks for the help guys
Zoran

if tangs are your favorite and you want to keep them im sure most everyone on here will reccomend just getting a bigger tank.

i've never kept tangs myself but from what i read online... they need alot more space then a 40 gallon can provide due to their swimming habits.

and a 40 gallon may not be able to support a sand sifting goby for very long.

Whoever told you that you can put 2 tangs in a 40 gallon lied to you or is just trying to sell you something. If you are worried about a tang stressing out, then to be completely honest, you should not have a tang in your 40. My buddy had a baby blue hippo in his 40 for a while, but ended up having to get rid of it when it got too big for the tank. I think you need at least a 75 gallon tank before considering tangs.....and some would say that even that is too small. Just my opinion, but if your main concern is making sure you do not stress the fish out.....then tangs should not make there way into your 40 gallon tank.

There aren't any tangs that are recommended for a tank that size.

Those tangs will all grow way to big for a 40 gallon breeder...including the hippo and yellow....get ready for the tang police to roll in here.....

Sorry to be the downer here, but there is 100% no way at all that you should be considering a naso tang for a 40!!! I know people with 125's that won't even get a naso because they do not think the 125 is enough room for a naso.

LIke I said above, I would not recommend any tangs in a 40, but IF you actually do this, you would be making a HUGE mistake if any more than 1 tang is in your 40.

I have this cool idea...

Use the 40 breeder as a sump and tell your girlfriend you're buying a 90G display tank so you can get that special goby she is wanting!

You will be the freaking hero, and you'll be able to get a couple of small tangs!

Trust me. Upgrade now, or do it six months from now. It's gonna happen, and you'll wish you had done it to begin with.

Been there, done that.

Good luck.

LL

The tang police are coming....RUN!

I love tangs too, sucks they need so much room LOL, but when you love your hobby, you gotta love your critters too. Sorry you are outta room.. LL is right, up grade now, cuz if you do it later it only costs you more in the long run. (Me too, been there, done that!)

..or you just end up adding tanks & have then all over your house (like I do) LOL

yah, i dont have the room right now. im only 19 and living with my parents, i have my basement, but i have so much stuff i can only fit the 40 gallon breeder in right now, when i get my own house, i want a 300 gallon, but my girlfriend thinks its too big, and thinks we should make a mutual agreement, but im going to try to persuade her into a 300 maybe a 250 lol. but yah sucks i wish i could get a 90 but just not room at the moment. and no need to the "police" to come ill be waiting for a big enough tank for tangs

Just remember, the bigger the tank, the more room for all those wonderful critters! And...

...the lights cost more;

the skimmer costs more;

the live rock costs more;

the heaters cost more;

the return pump costs more;

the stand costs more;

the powerheads cost more;

the salt costs more;

the electricity costs more...

Well, I guess you get the point! Enjoy your 40 breeder for now!

If you cannot be committed to getting a bigger tank, do not get a tang in a 40 gal breeder.

I did put a couple of small tangs in a 40 gal tank, but I did indeed get a much bigger tank for them after a couple of years.

Some people are committed to having a bigger tank and will get a bigger tank.

You may not be in the right age group for such committment.
