odor on my hands
When working in the tank or handling live rock from in tank the rock has an odor to it also my hands have same odor on them. is this normal smell of a salt tank. Not the odor of rotten fish at a harbor .

Ronny,
No I would say it's not normal. the rock should smell clean. are you over feeding? have you treated the tank for anything? have you tested ammonia lately? what are you nitrates? Do you run GAC?

What about granulated activated carbon? Do you run that in your tank? If so when was the last time you changed it out?

Ronny, you always have these unique problems that can't be answered . Does the rock feel slimy?

Hey Ronny, you might just have a sensitive nose like me. I get the saltwater/ocean smell on my hands after working on my tank and as long as it doesn't smell rotten or slimy, you have nothing to worry about.

Ronny....I know its hard to describe a smell, so that makes it hard to tell you what it is.
There is a kinda fishy smell to a saltwater tank.....However If its a rotten small, thats not good. If you have ever had a dead snail & took it out.....Take a good wiff of it...THATS A rotten smell.

Well I solved the problem!! I took the coral in ? from a previous post on a coral turning white and not looking good at all. The LFS said it was dying and on it's way out. I took rack out and scrubed the coral off from it .I placed the piece of live rock back in went on the road. This was last sunday.I also purchased 10 new hermits while I was at the store with the coral. On my way home last nite I stoped in to the LFS asked them for a paper towel stuck my hand in there big display tank and wiped my hand off ans no smell what so ever. The LFS said they didn't know what was wrong with my set up . Well this morning i checked my tank and no smell. i think it was the dying coral. it smells nothing abnoral now.
