research comes first.........
It has always helped me to make a list of what you want/have , even drawing it out on paper so you can see if you have overlooked anything.
Remember, patience is paramount and well reseached plan is a successful plan. Go to the "stickies" posted at the top of the New to the hobby forum, the path to a successful reef tank lies there. Welcome to Reef Central HunterB!!

To Reef Central Some of what your looking for depends on what you want to keep in your tank. SPS, LPS, mixed reef, fish only, etc...... Deciding on that will dictate what type of equipment your going to need, which may be what your trying to figure out at the moment.

T Man is right, make a list and see what you need. If you have a local saltwater store, maybe you can talk to them to get more ideas. When I started, I talked to a couple different people and got their opinions. Plus, there is lots of help on these forums too! Good luck!

Agree 100% with Konadog. You need to decide what you want to keep in your tank and this will help you decide what type of equipment you need (lights, etc.). So you don't have to worry about upgrading equipment in the near future.
