Current Home Depot Fuge Light?

I am getting back into the hobby after a few years. Back in the dark ages, around the turn of the century, it was possible to buy a really decent screw-in CF fuge light at Home Depot. I think Melev's thread had it listed.

All the brands have changed at HD. Does anybody know of a light they sell there or at Lowes that does as good a job of growing Cheato?

CFL's

I bought a CFL at Lowe's that uses something like 13 watts but productes 65 watts. You can use anything that says daytime or full day spectrum. Seems to be working for me so far.

Take a look at those 'daylight' bulbs.. Read the small print. I think most are running at 5000K..

All I've found worth a crap were grow bulbs.. but they run at 60 watts incand

Bvoss, you are referring to the old "Lights of America" 65w work light / shop light. I haven't heard anyone mention these for a long time, almost forgot about them! I had two myself, and used them for a refugium, and they worked very well!

I haven't seen those lights being sold by anyone for a long time, however any screw-in type compact fluor. that is in the 5,000k plus range would work for you. Check out the kelvin ratings on the ones being sold at the hardware stores.

Chaetomorpha algae, it's one of the best macroalgaes you can use for refugia and nutrient export.

Testing has been done for you.

http://www.melevsreef.com/fuge_bulb.html

http://www.lightbulbsdirect.com/page...ctors/1P381951

been using these for along time now, no heat, built in reflector, good price, and crazy cheato growth. I cut mine back every 3 weeks for the last 4 years. I tried the one at lowes and HD but the K value is off.

I was thinking of the old LOA bulbs Jeremy mentioned. Maybe I'll order some of those bulbs Melev uses from lightbulbsdirect.

I couldnt find the 5100k bulbs at any of my local HD or Lowes. They only had 2700, 3500 or 6500. I looked all week. I finally ordered from LOA.

The 5100k like in Melev's link is what he got the best growth rates on his chaeto.

That's what I use...works like a charm. Big nasty ball of cheato that I tear in half about every 3 weeks.

Here is a link to the cheapest and widest selction of TCP Par38's I found. Cheaper price offsets shipping a bit if you buy more than one.

http://www.businesslights.com/cfl-pa...8_569_442.html

Got sick of the search and will just order online.

Walmart has a regular screw in compact that is 65K. I use two on my ten gal and the corals are slowly growing.

Thanks Jeremy B., my refugium is full of Calerpa but I've probably got chaeto in there and don't even know it.

Hey, great service by the way (again).

Mike

Just an FYI... I have to give a huge thumbs up to Light Bulbs Direct. I ordered the 5100k floodlight that Melev tested and it arrived broken (thank you USPS). The spiral was intact but the outer shell was shattered. I emailed LBD, and they immediately shipped out a new one. Awesome!

Consider me a dumba** but after a month I finally got the right bulb. I was asking/emailing several member but could not get exact bulb. I would check out lighting while at lowes/home depot checking out the packaging.

Finally last week I was at lowes and not in a rush. I finally looked up and low and behold they have K ratings for bulbs. I found a 23 watt CFL spotlight with 6500K bulb. Installed it without the reflector b/c it had silver lining for that. Less than a week now and my chaeto has double in size.

At 23 watts I would not feel guilty running it 24/7

I have one maybe two of those LoA bulbs, unused, that you can have for the price of the shipping if you want. Just the bulbs.

+1 My Chaeto took off when I got this light. 65w of florescent is A LOT of light. fixture cost $35 at walmart and $50 at home depot. I beleive they were pulled off the market because they were popular with other "hobbyist" as grow lights. I got mine 8 months ago for my fuge and picked up a light sensor model for my deck.

As an edit; the 23 watts for the cfl equates to 100 watts incandescent. Bulb was like $8 and I already had the clip on reflector. I removed the reflector. Can't go wrong with probably a $15 set up.
