Lots of people have used wet-dry vacuums successfully. I'd just try a siphon first, most likely, but either should work.

Are you removing the sand from a tank that is still full? If so, I would assume a wet/dry would pull to much water to quickly. Its simple to remove a bit of sand at a time with a siphon hose, pour the water from the bucket back into the tank when full, then repeat until you've got it all.

If it is empty I would just put a 5g or so bucket in the tank, take a large scoop, fill it as full as you can while still being easily able to get the bucket out, and dump it like that. Wet dry would work too... dunno if you are wanting to re-use the sand for anything at all though.

I didnt think it was too bad to just manually scoope the sand out of the tank... i had a little over 2 5 gal buckets. Honestly i never thought about the old wet vac.
