best way to add a fish to QT

Hello,
I wanted to know the best way to add a fish in a QT? I am going to buy my first fish after X-mas and my 120 gal. DT has been done cycling for about a month now and stable. I set up a QT and wanted to know when should i put my spounge filter that is in my sump in my QT for when i start QTing my fish?

thanks in advance
Jeremiah

I would let the sponge seed in sump for a couple of weeks and move it to the QT when you're ready to put the first fish in.

The first step I follow is to fill your qt tank with water from your DT. Next to acclimate the fish properly. There are two main methods, the drip and the water exchange. I prefer adding the DT water slowly to the container the fish is in. Basically you exchange 1/4 of the water in the bag with the water in your DT every ten minutes for and hour. Before releasing the fish into the QT tank and depending on the type of fish, I usually also give it a methylene blue bath once acclimated.

Sorry to hi-jack your thread... but...

what strength of methylene blue do you use? Do you mix the Methylene blue with water from QT or temperature acclimated RO/DI water?

Thanks!

I mix it according to the directions on the back of the bottle.

The water I use is temperate and PH corrected RO/DI water to the DT/QT tanks parameters. I use baking soda to bring up the PH of the RO?DI water slowly if it is too low. Also I "dip" the fish using my wife's salad spinner(it usually doesn't go over very well but I still do it!), as it doesn't have any sharp edges and allows water to drain away from the fish before transferring to QT.

thanks sheac, and sorry again Jeremiah. You're a brave man for using your wife's salad spinner! I think someone needs to buy you a breeders box, like we use for guppies, so you can dip with out getting ich in your salad!

Thanks, but she has learned that most of the kitchen utensils are going to end up in my fish room at some point ... Of course this causes a few issues, like double the number of measuring cups and spoons one might find in a house, but it all works out in the end.
