Thermometer placement

Where are you putting you temp probes? I have a lab grade electronic thermometer and have the lead in my return section of my sump next to my return pump. Is this the right placement or does it need to be in my display. After looking online I have seen many temp probes in the sump (for example using the apex with ph and temp probes) so I assumed this is where I need to put my probe. I would not think it would matter due to the constant flow of water in the system.

The only thing i would worry about with probes in the return section is that they may come loose and could get sucked into the pump...but as far as reading goes, your placement sounds good!

I have my digital (Lifeguard Big temp) in the DT (actually it is in the overflow so it is out of sight).

AND I have a $4.00 mercury thermo in the SUMP (skimmer section). I compare the 2 thermometers anytime I am doing maint.

I had my thermometer in the fuge section BUT it would grow Coraline algae all over and not be readable.

Keep it as far away from your heater as possible and you will be fine. The closer to the heater the mote skewed your readings will be.

I also put mine in the DT. That way I really know what the temp is in there.

I put my temp probe in the DT, so that if the return pump goes out (or I forget to turn it back on after feeding), the temp alarm will alert me (since the heater is in the sump and the ambient temp is in the 60s F).

i like to have the thermometer in the dt away from the heater and as low in the tank as i can get it. reason being that i feel this provides the reading in the area having the low end of any in tank temp variation. a second one elsewhere would be a good idea in larger tanks.

I would say putting it in the sump/fuge is just fine. keep in mind that the temp may vary from the sump to the DT but as long as you know what the variable is you can compensate and keep the temp where you want it. Putting it in the sump just removes another unsightly thing from the display.

I have my sensor in the Sump where my Filter Socks are, so it should be getting the current temp coming from the DT....i hope anyway...lol

Thank you for all the input, I am able to get my hands on a few more thermometers so I think I am going to put them in different parts of the tank and do some comparison readings. For those who have not put their input please do so. The more input is better and might answer a few questions for others who have been wondering as well.

With doing that you are going to run into a calibration problem. Each probe will measure differently and give you false readings. If you want to experiment, use the same probe in different locations. that will give you your best results

Two, four, six, eight...
Ya just got to cali-brate!

No problem if you're using a common controller with more than one probe. Very simple to calibrate against each other. Piece of cake.

I put one temp probe in the DT overflow and a second in the Return chamber of the sump. The "ins and outs" of the display tank... I use the "outs" to control the heaters, fans and other temp related controls...

I place in the sump away from the heater because I don't like the look of it in the DT. However, someone raised a very valid point about a pump failure. You might not know the DT water is cooling if the return pump fails.
