Need pump recommendation
Hello! I am hoping to get some recommendations on a new pump for my skimmer. I have a Bermuda Aquatics BPS-3c skimmer, which I love, but the pump I am running it on is soooo loud. It sounds like it's shaking the Earth! I am using the Gen-X gx6000 pump that I bought it with. That pump pushes 1587 gph. I need something submersible, with a similar gph, but that's quiet! Any ideas or recommendations??
TIA! |

Oh! I should add that I'd like to stay in the $100-$200 range if I can.

If you don't need a needle wheel pump, you should be able to get a laguna/askol 1500 maxflo that fits in your budget. ($170)
Premium Aquatics also has the water blaster 7000 (I can't find a 6000 LPH pump) But both these are mainly used in needlewheel configurations, I'm not sure how they'd do on your Bermuda |

Thank you ricde for your reply! I wasn't sure if it needed a needle-wheel or not, so I looked it up on the manufacturer's website and found that it does not. Also, in looking it up, I found that they recommend 700-900 gph pump. Gee, I wonder if that's why I'm getting so much noise from 1500+ gph.
They recommend the Sedra 700, Mag 7, or some model of Rio but I've heard bad things about Rio. Anyone have experience with Sedra or Mag 7? It is noisy? Or experience with another pump in that gph range that's quiet? |

get one of the marineland pumps. I bought the 5500 and split the outlet flow into two feeds. One to the tank and the other to my skimmer. I didn't have the cash for a new skimmer and wanted to use my current Octo 800s HOB. Very quiet and will fit in your price range.

If your happy with the extra flow of the current pump and can still keep the skimmer from overflowing, the laguna should be a lot quieter.
You can also get a water blaster 4000 (a little over 1000 gph) or the WB 5000 (1300 gph) The mags are pretty reliable but aren't known to be quiet. Still should be better than the current one and will save you a lot of $$$ Can't comment on the sedra, never used one |

I have the exact a same skimmer and am running a mag 7 on it now. I love it pulls tons of gunk. If you are running it in sump the 7 should be plenty if you run it external I think a mag 9 or something in that area for flow about 900 to 950 gph will be plenty. I love the Bermuda products my lfs uses them and they are great. Hope your happy with your skimmer.

Ive heard good and bad about rio pumps as well. But for my 2 cents. I've had a rio 14hf (hypor flo) as my return pump for 2 yrs and its as strong/quiet as the day I hooked it up. Not bad for 40 bucks
