Can 2 54w t5's really add much to 2x250 halides?

No...but 6 - 8 can.

yes. i run 2 x 39s with my 2 x 175 halides. i run 15k halides with a uvl super actinic & actinic white, i can tell a difference in color with & without the t5s.
