large beckett skimmer - need design advice

I am going to build a large beckett skimmer for the 300 gal tank I am restarting. I had a smaller recirculating venturi style on the tank last time, but this time I want more flow. The pictures (i think i attached) are of the old skimmer and new skimmer body and the new skimmers home from two views. I am wanting to feed the outflow of the skimmer into a dump tank that doubles as a refugium. This will require the skimmer to sit about level with the bottom of the tank. So my question is.....why is the feeder tube always beside the main column? Can I position the pump(iwaki RLT55) under the skimmer?
