Mushroom Question
Do mushrooms split or do you have to frag them?
Also my biggest mushroom (bigger than a gallon bottle cap) started to slim and when I got up the next day it was no longer there. I did a water change before it started slimming. The other mushrooms in the tank are doing fine. What could be the problem?

IME they dont reallt split. they move and leave a piece of their foot behinde and that become another shroom. i have however frag them too.

Your shroom probably detached from the rock and is now floating around in your tank somewhere. It will most likely reattach elsewhere. Sometimes if they do not like the spot they were placed or are stressed they will do that.

king fisher is right. it will find a place of its own hopefully. sometimes they die though because they get stuck in a spot with no light. try looking around the tank a little

You can frag them by splitting the head right down the center. I have seen people split a large shrrom in to 4-8 pieces, let it rest on some rubble, and in a few weeks time there are 4-8 new heads. They also tend to spread out over rocks, much like zoanthids, though maybe not quite as close together.

I followed this technique of propagating mushrooms. They stuck to the rubble within 2 weeks and I placed the rubble in random places on my rocks. The mushrooms I cut up are now looking round and starting to grow within a week.

The first corals I ever got were blue mushrooms. Every other week it seems there are a few new ones growing on the rock they are on. From time to time one will float around and attach somewhere else. I've even found them in my canister filter before. I just removed and placed in the tank and they survived. They are resilient. I've accidently buried a few before and a week or so later found them doing a little cleaning and they bounced right back. As long as your water is even semi decent they will survive.
