is this extreme overkill????

OK, so my pump (sedra 5000) on my EuroReef ES6 just went out about 5 days ago. I have been running skimmerless on a 40g SPS dominated tank since then-- I am really concerned and have been doing 5g water changes every other day. So I ordered a Sedra 5000 and it is completely different-- wrong deminsions and fittings. Long story short-- I can't get it to work on my skimmer. I tried.

So my question is, I have a MRC 2R for my next tank build (not in use, and has never seen water), and would like to know if that would be too much for my 40br????? I think I know the answer, but input would be great.

It sounds like you know and/or have read, a big skimmer on that small of a system may just not work very well. I'd say give it a shot if it's easy enough to incorporate into your current setup. It won't hurt to try it as long as you don't go crazy on your feedings. Unless you feed a ton or have an uber clean SPS tank, 5g water changes every day is probably a little overkill.

I do feed every day, but wish I had an uberclean tank. I am not sure how easy it will be, but I have it and I don't want to buy a skimmer to use for 3 months. i will see. Thanks

just use the skimmer you have laying around, just don't run it 24/7 and that should give you the results you are looking for without fear of pulling too much out and starving things, the 5g water changes are plenty on a skimmerless 40g...i rank skimmer less on my BC29g for 6-8 months before i even bought one and only notice a slight difference with one
