Tank Leak Is my floor ruined?
My roommate's 125g canister pump leaked 20-30 gallons while I was out of town on business? Is the carpet, pad, and subfloor ruined? His daughter also knock my ph meter into one of my tanks.
Accidents happen but the fact that he tried to hide both pi$$es me off. Can you say eviction time? Venting, Butch |

If it was salt water, the carpet and pad are most likely shot. The subfloor can survive but will need to be dried out.

thats sucks man...sorry to hear that...I agree with username...if salt water carpet probably needs replacing

water will dry, just vaccum up salt or powder residue, happened many times with old tank, moved it to put in a new one and carpet was fine

As long as rot hasn't settled in, structurally you should be ok. Depending on how long the leak occurred and he hid the aftermath will determine whether the carpet and padding are salvageable. They will be subject to mold so should be cleaned or discarded soon.

In the world of saltwater spills, 30 gallon is the proverbial drop in the ocean. Buy or rent a steam cleaner (i have a hoover steamvac - love it!) and all will be ok. As for hiding the problem - now THATS a problem!!!

the carpet should be fine as long as you can get most of the salt out with a steam cleaner. the water should not hurt the integrity of the carpet as long as it does not keep happening. we get carpet wet to stretch it if you cut it short. the pad will most likely be shot.
