To Frag/Remove a Toadstool Leather?

Hey everyone!
Im upgrading my 10 gal nano to a 29 gallon this week. I encountered a blast of aptasia from no where so Im leaving the rock out that has this crap on it. One problem, I have a nice Toadstool Leather that is on a small rock, but the rock is covered in aptasia. Its really ****ing the coral off and I REFUSE to place this in my upgrade. Is there a way that I can just cut the coral right off the base of the rock? Kinda like cutting a tree down, leaving a stump behind. I have done this with Kenya, but I know how leathers can be toxic. Whats the best way to keep my coral without keeping the rock filled aptasia?

I can only help you in saying that I've successfully cut my toadstool with scissors and rubber banded it to a rock and was successful a couple of times. The person who sold me the Toadstool told me to DEFINITELY NOT superglue or epoxy it.

so... rubberband/tie it to a new rock, don't glue it.

that's all I can chip in

Yes, you can do just what you want. Use a good sharp kitchen knife and cut it off.

I have fragged my toadstool many times in many different ways and they always seem to pull through. you have to rubber band them to a rock otherwise they will float away.

I had the same question as the OP. But another question ... if you leave some of the stalk on the original rock does it die off, regenerate, what?

If you leave even the smallest piece of tissue it will grow back...which is a great thing

If you are going to be fragging you may want to research some coral dips as a cleanser to the wounds you create.

I haven't used them so I don't have a review for you, but its something to read up on.

Coral Dip
Reef Dip
Coral ReVive
etc

This is not my picture but these are the actual toadstools (the two in the center) - I bought them Saturday and the rock has encrusting gorgonia on it and I'd like to remove the toadstools from that rock.

Toadstools (or any leathers really) are very easy to frag. Just cut it off. You can glue a toothpick to a rock, then place the toadstool on top of the toothpick. It'll quickly attach itself to the surrounding rock.

I've moved them before and found out they had attached to a nearby rock. Soon after, I have two growing in my tank.

Break the rock from around the leather. Hammer and chisel.

Good idea Julie. Because I really dread cutting it. Can gorgonian be lifted off in a mat?

You won't hurt the toadstool. I've cut leathers into 20 pieces, even the smallest piece will grow back. Sometimes it's almost as annoying as mushrooms.

Oh very cool! I really didnt want to break this rock apart. Since I already have some Aptasia in the 125, I will throw that rock in that tank, no biggie. Then it can reproduce in there. I cant wait to get my new tank stocked up! Im excited! More room, no aptasia, more coral, more fish. I love it!!!!
