Let it calm down to be honest..... The cloud will go away after a few hours. We had the same problem with sand "clouds"

You can run a sock in your sump or a canister filter for a while. The sand storm should calm down after a week or so. Once all the powder type particles are skimmed and filtered out it shouldnt be that bad.

Your equation looks better than mine. Mine is diamond goby=good meal for someone who has not yet been determined. I'm on my third one, and they just keep getting eater. Don't know by who, but they don't last at all in my tank.

my goby sandstorm lasted a month. I ran a sock and rotated it out daily.
I still really like my goby.. good personality and clean sand.

Don't you get tired of the sand all over the rocks and corals on the sand bed? I would like to get something to keep the sand a little cleaner, but I don't want sand all over everything all the time.

My goby rarely leaves the sand and does not sprinkle the rocks like some do.

What exactly will the Diamond Goby clear the sand of? Right now I'm in the cycling process and have pieces of brown stuff that has fallen of my LR...I've got a feeling the Goby won't take care of that for me..?

It eats the little guys that borrow in the sand, but by doing that it also keeps algae from collecting on the sand.

Be aware that they will jump. I went through 2 of them. I have eggcrate on top but they manage to torpedo themselves even through the holes in the eggcrate. Also the larger ones can move a ton of sand fast. They can dig out under rocks and take away the support if they are not placed on the glass first.

+1 on moving a LOT of sand.
I had a couple of rock falls within the first week. All of my rocks have stabilized and now it is not much of an issue. I have 24" front to back and my rock is positioned more toward the rear (if it falls it will go that way). If your situation is different you should secure your rock structure. My goby also eats "everything" I feed from the watercolumn not just food in the sand. But so far he still sifts the sand throughout the day. This keeps any detrius stirred up so I dont have to vac or stir my sand bed.

Diamond goby, the only fish that actually earns his keep I love mine. He tends to make large piles. I just knock them down and he gets to rebuild.

Likewise, I love my goby. He tends to go a little crazy sometimes and I have to straighten up after him w/ a turkey baster. He has a good tempermant and is buds w/ the clown fish pair.

I'm starting to get a really bad algae problem on my sandbed. It will come up in one sheet if I don't stir up the sand daily. I was hoping my lawnmower blenny would take care of it, but he mostly stays in the rocks. Will a diamond goby and my blenny get along? My blenny only sits on the sand when eating off the glass (at the bottom where I avoid with my magnet scrubber).

I wouldn't recommend a diamond watchmen goby (or any goby) for the following reasons:
1) Will make huge mounds of sand in your bed. 2) Will cover corals, or dig under them and knock them over. 3) Will dig under your live rock and cause an avalanche. 4) Will eat all the pods out of your tank, might not be bad for some but if you have other fish that eat pods, they'll starve before he will. I had one for awhile but got tired of all the issues above. He did keep the sand bed clean of algae and he was a lot of fun to watch. I kind of miss him, but I'm glad he's gone and I don't have to deal with the issues above. Also, it is possible to catch him. I thought it would be harder than it was. I chased him with a net into his cave and then just left the net right in front of his opening. When he came out an hour later he swam right into it and I scooped him out and brought him back to my LFS. Just my .02. I'm looking into getting some more snails to clean the bed of algae and a conch. |
