Skimmer - No Sump

I'm just starting to set up my 75g and in the near future I'll be adding a skimmer. My question is this, can I buy a skimmer and set it on the floor next to my tank? I will not have a sump & the idea of a HOB bothers me. I don't really want to have to place my tank 5"-8" away from the wall just to give a HOB room. So can I buy a skimmer and just put it next to the tank? Would it help if I upgraded the pump to get the water back up to the tank? Does anyone make a skimmer that has an intake & return that will hang over the back like the HOB, NO DRILLING on this tank?
thanks

if you put a sump style skimmer on the floor, it will overflow onto the floor.......... it you put a bigger pump on it, it will overflow onto the floor faster.

LOL, that's funny, thanks!

I thought about placing a HOB on the side of the tank, but then I can't put the glass top on, and I want to keep a top on it.

If you don't have a sump, then HOB is the way to go. The new Reef Octo SRO HOBs look pretty cool.

I don't know what you plan to put in your tank, but glass covers cut down the light reaching the tank by around 20%. Also glass tops don't cover the whole tank, they have a 2" or so space in back with a plastic strip to cover that section. This strip can be cut to fit any HOB equipment you have. A lot of people use egg crate or build a screen to cover their tank. Its cheaper than the glass covers, and all the materials are at Lowes or Home Depot. Its the screen window/door section. These too can be tailored around any HOB equipment.

As was said, an in sump skimmer on the floor would just overflow.

I believe that SWC has a new HOB that should work great for your tank. You could put a external skimmer next to your tank and plumb the return right back into your tank, but you will have a pump in the tank and skimmer next to it. That is why people use sumps under the tank to hide things. You will need very good circulation if you run a HOB.
