Overheard in LFS
So I was in the LFS the other day to buy some Chromis, and they were light on staff so I had to wait for the owner to finish with another customer. The other customer was there with his young son (maybe 5 or 6) and clearly had no idea at all about saltwater tanks so the owner was showing him around and explaining the basics.
I was standing in front of their "display" tank waiting, and finally the owner left them to look around the store while he grabbed my fish. So the guy and his son come over and are looking at the display tank, and all the sudden the kid (5 years old) goes "I don't know Dad, this stuff seems really expensive." It was priceless. I thought to myself, wow this kid summed up the hobby within about 10 minutes of coming into the store! |

Simply amazing that a kid that young woudl realize that fact. For the longest time I had wanted a saltwater aquarium but was always afraid of the cost vs. chances of success on my first tank, which has actually went rather well considering my lack of funds when I set it up. Even after almost a year into the hobby I still get shocked when I look at how much it costs to have a piece of the sea.

LOL!
My daughter, who accompanies me on all my outings to the LFS once said to me: "Mama, I know we must not be poor... because you always spend lots of money at the fish store." Of course I told her that if we are poor it's likely because I spend so much at the fish store.

It may be expensive, but I have friends that spend their life savings on a race car or 6000 on an atv. In the couple years I've been in the hobby I have yet to spend over 5 grand. I might be close but I don't have a race car or any other pets. No vet bills.(except maybe interceptor) .....of coarse this is all just rationalization and justification for when a man tells himself "just one more thing".

very true. one lfs i frequent, not a saltwater one was trying to talk me out of going to saltwater telling me it would cost me about 3 grand to start up and then tons of money for maintenance. kind of scared me off but thanks to local reefers i am gettin all that i need at a fraction of that mentioned price.

you just never know whats gonna come out of the mouths of kids... atleast this kid was honest... but every hobby costs money its just what you want to spend your money on and how much your willing to spend..i could spend the $$$$ at the local strip club on strippers and over priced beer and not remember it the next day or buy a fish/coral that i have for many years to come (if i dont kill it)

Between Craigslist and local reef forums this hobby can actually be pretty reasonable in the big scheme of things.
