How old is the tank, what are your parameters, etc, etc
Do you know what kind of algae it is? If not, post a pic

Diatoms are brown/orange, what is the new green algae you are referring to? Hair algae?

Diatoms don't actually turn green, but they are probably dieing off and new green algae is coming up. Your tank will go through a lot of phases and algae is just one of them. In fact, it is one of those phases that never really goes away, you just learn how to control it.

I wouldnt clean it off, just run your skimmer. In every tank I have ever cycled I have had a brown diatome outbreak, followed by a green algea bloom. If it goes green, start testing. It's a good sign your closed to done with your cycle.

Go ahead and clean it off the glass. Leave it on the rocks.
Sounds like you're starting to get hair algae. Some hair algae is a good sign of tank maturity, to keep it under control get your little friends (cleaners) to help. Also it gives your herbivores something to eat and pick at. |
