Nori for tangs

Here's my concern about my tangs and foxface, I hear a lot of people say that nori has no nutritional value bute they eat it and love it. Some say that its din and recommend it. My problem is I feed them nori, red seaweed, pellets, mysis and cyclopees on different days of the week but right now there is a shortage of red sea weed due to the winter conditions. So what are people feeding there tangs?

I do too but some people say that they increase phosphates, nitrates and have no nutritional value.

I use Chinese nori as well - have for months. I read the same theory about phosphates in nori, probably a rumor started by folks who sell small bags of "special aquarium seaweed" for $15. I have a digital photometer and soaked some of the supermarket nori in RO/DI. Then I measured for phosphates - zero. So much for that theory.
I didn't measure for nitrates, but don't expect a problem with my water volume and regular water changes. If you're concerned about nutrition, you could always soak nori in Selcon. I'm not concerned because all my tangs and rabbitfish are (very) plump and healthy...

I'm with George on this one, when my tank was full of tangs , I fed nori every day, and mysis/brine mixture once a week. And they were getting enough nutritional value from that to get fat and stay happy.

Yeah thanks guys. Ive never had a problem with nori either it's just I'm not trying to bash the reef shop by no means. I'm very happy with them but I think sometimes they just want you to buy their live seaweed at 6 dollars a bag.

I feed nori to my tang. I have no nutritional information on the subject, but she's been plump and looking healthy and really enjoys eating the stuff so I don't ask her questions.

I suppose we can just hope we aren't feeding the surgeons the equivalent of McDonald's food. Side note: Has anyone seen Spurlock's documentary Super Size Me?

From a pack of Nori.
As you can see 4.8 (2 sheets) has 2g carbs (which the tangs need) and 2g Protein (which the tangs need). As for the sodium, well I dont think they need to worry about heart disease.

So, to set the record straight....Nori is probably one of the most nutritious substances out there, which is why so much is being invested into the use of algaes as an easy grown hi nutritional value food source. It is absolutely perfect for tangs, and any other herbivore.

Regards,

P.

Nori has shown to help stop or combat lateral line diease in Tangs, I feed at least 2 sheets a day. Basically if I look in the tank and the Nori is gone I put more in. Tangs are grazer's and having a constant source of algie just helps to promote strong health.

That's pretty much my flow Greg. If my lawnmower and tang have taken care of my providings from the previous day, I'lll make sure they have adequate food to feast on.

Amd thanks for clearing that up, Paul.
