3 qt tanks?

Do you really need 3? One for fish, one for inverts, one for corals? Or can you put corals and inverts together?

You can put them all together so long as you are not treating the tank with anything that would be harmful to corals and inverts (eg copper).

Why would you qt inverts and why not just dip the corals?

QT for Clams and Corals

In the past I have not QT clams and corals, only fish. Is it good practice to QT clams and corals? If so can I QT them in the same method I did my new fish. For the fish I would use a 20 gal tank and fill it with water from my display tank then hook up an old biowhell HOB filter and a UV sterilizer as well as a cheapo flourescent light and cheapo heater. A few questions:

1. Would this setup be sufficeint for QT of corals and clams?
2. Do I need to worry about maintaining Alk and Calc while the QT is in operation?
3. Do I need to worry about the QT tank cycling?
4. How long should I QT clams and corals for?

Thanks

I was under the impression that everything needs to be qt'd. Corals should be kept for a couple of days to observe for bugs and any ugly hitchhikers. I'm with you I would like to be able to just acclimate, dip, and in they go! Do inverts need to qt? I don't know. I hope someone will inform us.

this will work. You should put the sponge from your cheapo filter in your dt sump. Then when you are ready to use the qt that sponge will be full of nitrifying bacteria and you won't have to worry so much about the qt cycling.

To answer your questions:

1) yes
2) no
3) yes keep an eye on it
4) a few days. Look for pests. On the clam look out for those nasty pyram snails!
