protien skimmer (hang on or in sump)

Is there a reason to use the protein skimmer in the sump or can I use a hanging one to conserve space for my sump/refugium? My plan is to put a hanging one on the side of my sump and refugium so I can have more space for rubble live rock and sand.

I know of no h/o skimmer that is as effective as an in sump. That being said...At one time I used a Remora pro and hung it on my 20L sump. It was ok but not nearly as good as it's replacement. My advice is to by a good, in sump skimmer. You will not be disappointed.

That is fine. Most in tank skimmers out-perform HOB skimmers (and if the skimmer leaks it is self contained in the sump), so they are most frequntly set-up in the sump.

I used to have one in the sump. If your water level changes any at all it will make the skimmer overflow or not skim. I ended up going with one sitting beside my sump ,it is fed my a small maxijet . I have a AquaEuro 135 recirculating Skimmer.

I think the main advantage of in sump all other things being equal is the surface skimming action of the overflow. I used a few skimmers which could be used both ways and they definately perform a little better in sump. I still believe a good skimmer is a good skimmer so there are a few good hang on backs. now a hang on back thats good, affordable and not an eye sore...good luck finding that.

Anothing thing a sump buys you is better micro-bubble control. I had a HOB filter and sold it because.. A) Microbubbles contstantly bleeding into my tank. B) It was too noisy...sumps and stands help buffer that noise.

IMO A decent HOT skimmers needs WAY too much rear clearance not to mention it's ugly. Go with a sump skimmer..you'll regret it if you don't.

I also think it makes a difference how much you are able to spend.....I just ordered a deltec mce300 & that isn't an eyesore at all.....It also cost me $300 but nothing that is worth anything is cheap right??
