Quiet One versus Eheim pumps- Anyone used both?
I currently run a Eheim 1060 but i am in the market to get a little more GPH. I recently added the UV in line and the Chiller on the return off that pump. It does fine but it is slower, of course,. I would like to run maybe 1000 to 1500 GPH but im not for positive yet. I read that the quiet ones put off 42 DBs which im not sure how quiet that is. I can not find any info on the Eheim pumps to see what they put out. I know that eheim pumps are not affected as much on head pressure as many other models are. They are a bite pricey though and i have just got a mag9.5 for the ATO system and chiller and all that stuff i would like to save a bit of cash if possible. If not then so be it. I would rather buy the better one from the get go ( noise wise)

I ran a Quiet One 3000 on my 60 gallon display/ 29 gallon sump, and it worked great--strong and quiet. Some people say that their Quiet One pumps have trouble starting up after a power outage, but I did not experience that with my 3000 or the Quiet One 1200 that I have on my 39 gallon system. Have not yet tried an Eheim pump. (In case you decide to go with a pump that rates at 1500 gph, I just posted a Quiet One 6000 for sale on the used drygoods forum.)

Have never owned an eheim myself, but I am very happy with my quiet one return pump and I would definitely purchase their products again.

I also have a Q1 4000, got it used and it's been running non-stop for the past two years, no probs.
I was a little surprised by the headloss compared to a Mag 9.5, but it is cooler for sure. |

The complaints I typically see with QO, is they are not quiet, startup problems, and dont perform well in the headloss area. Not everyone has these issues, but they are posted frequently. I would go with an Eheim 1262 if you are looking for a stronger pump.

I have an Eheim 1050 and, like you, decided to go with more flow...
I recently picked up an Ocean Runner 3500 and am surprised by how quiet it is.... |

There is no comparison with the Eheim pumps, they are far and beyond the best return pumps in their price range. I would never recommend anything other than Eheims.

Sent my first QO back for noise. Second was better but after a month it too was very loud. Otherwise, no problems. Replacing this onnoxious device with an Ocean Runner.

I used to have QO pumps on return and had restart issues constantly. Went to Eheim and have never had an issue.

I have use both extensively over the years and the Eheim pumps outlast the Quiet One pumps every time. The Quiet ones are good for the price but usually dont last too long (couple years).

i have always liked the ocean runner pumps as well. i usually get the octopus version though, a lot more reasonable and virtually the same pump.

i have read soem info that states that eheims are not affected as much in the headloss area.. The mgs and other pumps lose a lot in those areas but not eheim... as far as i have read.. the 1262 is 950 GPH. with the UV and chiller would i lose that much? maybe about 8 feet of line wiht a T on it for the dual overflows. i would be willing to bet that i only get 200 right now because of all the other stuff.

Quiet One
Wouldn't use it if it were free. Pump rarely restarted after power outage. They do work well as a doorstop

The pump outlet accepts a 1/2" internal diameter male threaded fitting. I used a 1/2" MPT to 3/4" SLIP fitting and drilled it out with a 5/8th " drill bit which equates to a 25% increase in internal diameter. With the 3/4" slip fitting you glue this to your 3/4" PVC or Spa Flex and it will allow that pump to flow at it's max potential. I have an overflow rated for 700GPH and my pump attached to a return pipe with approx 4' verticle rise with one 90 degree elbow almost overruns the overflow. |

i am running it through the UV and the chiller, then it hits a T for the overflow boxes, i have pretty much took out all 90's and replaced with straight connections. have only 1 90 below the tank and the 2 that are on the retunrs , everythign else is straight. Its just slow. it was slow before i put the UV and Chiller on it to be honest. just runns out andn ot in a hurry. it keeps up with the overflow well but i would like to get a little more speed out of it if i could. It has 3/4 inner diameter hose on it. Do you have pics of what you did? To bad your not local. ")

Anyone used the compact versiosn ? i see they have adjustable setting on the output and they seem to be a little bit cheaper and have higher GPG ratings. Seems to good to be tru.

I have a QO 4000 that I am happy with. It starts up every time unless it has a large calcium build-up, which is my fault, not the pump's. I used to run it externally and it was noisy, but since I put it in the sump, you can barely hear a thing. I know Eheim has a good and probably deserved reputation, but I am more than happy with my QO and would buy one again.

The only thing special I did was drill out one of these with a 5/8th" drill bit to open some of the restriction right at the pump outlet From there it is all 3/4" spa flex or PVC.
I dont have all the losses you do though. I had used this pump to drive a closed loop through a chiller at one time and it wasn't bad like you say but I can see how you might want more flow. You mentioned 3/4" hose.. is that vinyl and if so is it holding its form? If it collapses at all that will hurt the flow Also if it is old it could have developed quite bit of build up inside of it. Bigger pump is what you need most likely.. I will always stick to Ehiem.. great pumps! |
