I run a BB display, BB sump and BB refugium, Live rock in refugium sits in a pile in the middle with chaeto ball hovering above. Because I use filter socks, it takes 3 months for some detritus to settle out on the bottom. I simply use a small 5 gallon shopvac once every 3 months and pull out the gunk. Wouldn't have it any other way. Simple, clean and efficient.

I have my 125 gal running barebottom with no sump for 10 years. You do not need sand if you have enough live rock.

I am trying the same in my new build. Plan on going completely sandless with the entire system. If you go with starboard under your rock I would take a look at US Plastics. They have some of the most affordable starboard I have found. If you buy from their precut selection (and they have precuts to many standard tank sizes) you get a discount compared to the price/sq.ft. custom sizes.
