Exclamation Disease? Worms in Caulastrea sp.

Hi

Noticed my Trumpet corals was looking strange today, at about 12:00, they were full of small worms. I have three independent colonies and all were full of white spots/worms at the same time!? Two hours later, the worms/spots were all gone and the corals look as if nothing happened?

I should add that they originally come from the same colony, but they were separated about a year ago. And that I faintly remember the same thing happening 6-7 months ago?

Is this a disease, and can something be done or is it sexual reproduction?

Thanks a lot, Anders

I would think if it was sexual reproduction it would come from the mouth of the polyp. Where do the white spots go?? Can you pluck one off and get it under a microscope. I have never seen anything like it. They look healthy though.

After 9 months, I don't think you'll get a better answer based on a one-time event with no better data.

What makes you think they're worms? To me, it looks like the coral got stressed briefly, some of the tissue deflated showing some skeleton and mesenterial filaments through the tissue. Whatever the stressor was went away, and the tissue reflated...making what looked like "worms" go away (tissue covered the mesenterial filaments again).

Well, what looks like the skeleton is the "worms" or "worm looking thingies" if you like, the coral was fine, no deflation at all..

Well I think I might have found out what it was..

I have now spoken with two others who experienced the same, one of them dissected the coral and found these tiny worms(copepoda) inside the corallite.

For now I haven't found any treatment and to be honest I doubt there is any.

I'll keep the coral for now and determine its future later on.
