Center Brace
Why or how can some tanks go without a center brace and others must have them?

Depends on the glass thickness and tank height. Glass will bend, so a brace is used to minimize it - but if the glass is thick enough it won't bend, no brace is needed, ie. rimless tanks.

Another way to look at it is the brace allows for a much less expensively built tank, in general.

Is there a calculator or something that will help you determine if you need a brace or not...
I have entertained the thought of building a tank for some time and might start jotting some plans down. |
