QT Question
Hey guys and gals,
Im running a 10 gal QT with a 2-3" hippo in it. I know the tank is a little small but its all I have right now for a QT before he gets moved to my DT. I really havent seen him eating anything. So far he hasnt touched the clip of seaweed, he may be eating a pellet or two that has been soaked in garlic but Im not real sure. My question is whether or not I am oxygenating the water good enough. He is somewhat active but really likes to lay on his side and underneath that coral. My wife has called my twice now thinking he was dead. I only have a small Hob filter running. There is a big piece of dead coral that was put in there from my DT and some pvc. Any other suggestions. |

You are right on the 10gal being small, but I to QT a small hippo in one. It acted about the same as you mentioned, it stayed hidden the intire time. I found that if I dropped some food in and walked away from the tank it would come out and eat, but if I stood watching it would not feed at all. I was running a small bubble filter, but if your concerened about oxygen you could add a small air pump and air stone to help. Best of luck to you and I hope all is well.

Ya I try to watch him from across the room but he doesnt seem to interested. Ive resorted to putting a towel over the tank so im not freaking him out every time we walk by.

That's a REALYY good idea and I'm sure it keeps you from looking at the fish every time you walk by too! When I buy a something from the LFS I always take a cooler with me for the ride home. I put the fish in there to keep them calm and the temp more constant. Then I always turn off the lights when adding it to the tank.

For filtration Im using an hob filter with a filter out of my display, and a large (6") piece of dead coral that has also been in my DT. Water quality has been holding right where it needs to be. I think he might be eating a little its hard to tell as he is really shy. Im just not use to having a slow light eater for a tang. Most of them have been pigs.
