ecoxotic Panorama LED Fixtures
Has anyone used these? Also, will they support sps? I wanted to get 2 of them for my 65g but wasn't sure about keeping sps with them

Those are only 1W LEDs, they might be good for adding some shimmer but they won't have enough punch to support a reef tank on their own.

Where did you get the info for this fixture. I wouldn't pay $1200 for something thats not gonna support anything.

These are the ones I assumed you were talking about: http://www.fosterandsmithaquatics.co...m?pcatid=21599
Take a look at the number of LEDs in the fixtures and the watt usage. You'll see there is approximately a 1:1 relationship. If they have other models just link to the one(s) you are looking at and we can weigh in. I agree with you, I wouldn't pay that much for the model referenced above. |

in the overview section it has a section that shows the number of each color LEDs and the total wattage for the whole fixture

I'm not familiar with LED's at all, but he seems to think that you don't need nearly as much wattage with LED's.

The Ecoxotic fixtures have absolutely no problem supporting a mixed reef. I would even go as far as saying keeping sps under them, within 15" - 18" of depth would probably be just fine as well. There were quite a few beta testers of these fixtures that ran them for as short as 6 months, and one gentlemen who is pretty well known in this industry for as long as a year and a half, and all pretty much had the same conclusion that sps is ok up to about 20". Color would hold on the corals (sps specific), but growth rates are not going to be great.
My advice on this fixture is if you're looking for a very well built, upgradeable, and moderately priced LED fixture for a mixed reef, this is the one to go with. IF you're looking for lighting for an sps dominated reef, I would look at something different. On another note, 1watt LED's are pretty darn powerful. Not all 1watt LED's are made / utilized the same. LED technology and the application is completely different than that of halide, so we can't think in terms of wattage only with them. HTH! |

I suppose they could be using 3W LEDs and driving them at 350milliamps to get approximately those voltage specs but I would give the manufacturer a call to confirm before buying.
I went out to the PanoramaSystems website and looked up their detailed spec sheet and it is rather ambiguous which leads me to still suspect that these are most likely 1W LEDs. http://www.ecoxotic.com/community/wp...stem_Specs.pdf Hopefully I'm wrong, it's a great looking fixture and it would be great if it could suppport SPS as you hope. I would just confirm before buying it and finding out it might not meet your needs. |

Ecoxotic is using 3w Cree LED's in their fixture, but only driving them at 1w/ea., which obviously gets them around the heat issue and no need for fans, etc.
I have loaned out my par meter to a friend last week, but will hopefully have it back in the next day or two. I'll get some numbers posted on them once available. Kevin Gaines, formerly of ORA, now with Sustainable Aquatics, is the one who ran them for an extended period of time over sps according to Ecoxotic. His findings were that in shallow situations they would hold good color, but not a lot of growth. I haven't had a chance to use it yet over any sps, but am eager to try it. |

Thanks for the input. No, I don't want a dominated sps tank, I just wanted to make sure I could keep them in a mixed reef. I'm not sure if they're bright. Do you know? I don't want a dim looking tank. Idk. It would save me a lot more in the long run though compared to halides. I wouldn't be able to do a sunrise sunset with the lights either. I suppose I could buy the stunner lights to add to them to do that though

Here are some photos of a 57g Oceanic tech that was just set up by a guy I know. He opted to go with a single 23.5" fixture instead of two 17.5" fixtures on a 36" tank.

Looks good. I think I might try it out. A lot of money to just try it out lol, but if it's worth it, it's a good investment. My anemone should do fine don't you think? Here's a pic of my tank as of right now with 1 250w in the middle and 2 actinics on front and back
