too remove a mantis or not
ok here is the story, set up a 90 gallon sps tank around 1-1-10, started with some base rock and 24 pounds of the nicest lr ive ever incountered in years in this hobby, oysters, lps, sps, crabs, and when i diped the rock originaly i found a mantis shrimp , so like a good conservertist i set up a seperate tank and keep the intresting little shrimp, well now three months later and after two canary fang blenny disaperances + two yellow bleeny + one black blenny, i finnally observed a second and much bigger mantis same spesis living in the tank. Ok here is the question i have three scarlet cleaner shrimp and one blood shrimp in main tank, with th ebigger mantis. I know the smaller shrimp is of the same family as the biger one in my tank, and i have been feding it pepperment shrimp, so i know it likes other shrimp. So am I just looking for trouble by leaveing this guy in my tank or should I remove it? I t appears the mantis and other shrimp have been in tank together from the get go. I am really on th efence on this part of me wants to see if i can have a nice sps w/ inverts and a mantis and all get along? any thoughts , insights would be considered and appresiated!

Generally if you want to keep anything else in your tank long term you will have to get rid of the mantis.

As long as you treat is as a proper inhabitant and count on 'feeding' it a certain amount of stuff, you can have it in there. Depending on the type (smasher/spearer), it may take out fish. Since you already mentioned fish loss, that is a possibility. It will kill stuff, just not corals. I have one N. wennerae about 2 1/2" long in my tank that I don't even know is there except every few months I see it. I 'feed' him a new snail crew every so often when mine starts to dwindle. They seem to like the nassarius and nerites as the shell seems to be easier to crack. Never had any problem with fish. Spearers will kill fish though.
If you have the ability, I would remove it. They are pretty cool and smart critters, but I have a hard time fully accepting mine. |

you are looking for trouble. absolutely get it out. that is my feeling on the subject of mantis shrimp after having gotten 3 as hitchers (well they were called slipper lobsters by the shmucks who sent me the rock) and watched them in action. at least they killed each other off down to one, but they killed anything else they could along the way
they even smash up the LR going after worms or something in the rock. that was actually cool to watch the mantis smashing the rocks..but..

Shayn, when you said you dipped the rock. what did you dip it in? When you dipped the rock, did you kill off everything in the rock or??? I have been hearing clicking noises coming from my tank and suspect i have a mantis or pistol. I will be removing all my rocks in the next week or so to scrub for algae and transfer to a new tank. Whats the best way to get this shrimp out of my rocks while i have the rocks out of my tank? I do not want to kill everything on my rock. I have lots of pods i need to be kept alive to feed my mandarin.

1) first i would show it the empty snail shells that used to house asst snails and hermits
2)then tell it "you have one chance to say something in your defense" 3)ruh roh, it sux to be him.........the hammer of justice has rung out (craftsman brand)
